1.Observe cleanliness and hygiene of the place where you plan to prepare the turkey. Also, let’s go back to the basics; wash your hands.

Cleaning your workspace is crucial to ensure that your turkey will be free from contamination. This can be done by thoroughly washing your hands including your fingernails. Also, use your antibacterial cleaning agent and warm water to clean the surface of your working space, your cutting boards and even knives.

2. Prepare all the necessary materials and make sure that they are within your reach.

You will need a:

  • Cutting board
  • Knives
  • Bowls and apron
  • Latex-free glove is also recommended since it will come handy for those with latex allergies

3.After laying the turkey stomach-side down, prepare to free the trachea and esophagus (if the turkey still has the neck).

This can be done by cutting along the back of the neck to free the esophagus and trachea to be able to pull them out through the pelvis.

5.Between the breastbone and the anus, cut a horizontal slit.

Be mindful of the fact that the slit should be large enough to fit your hand so you can pull the innards without having any issues and to make sure that you do not punctuate the innards. Puncturing it, especially the gallbladder will result for a messy result since the digestive juices will begin to break down the meat that it will touch.

6.Remove the organs using your hands

Yes, there is no other way to do this but through using your strong hands. Insert your hand and pull out all the organs including the heart and lungs. You might need to set aside some of these organs such as the heart, liver and gizzard since these can be cooked. Other organs need to be properly disposed of.

The crop is the sac in the breast of the turkey where it stores its eaten food. You can eliminate this part by cutting a slit between the neck and the chest, look for the sac and pull it apart. Most likely, this part no longer exists in store-bought turkey, but it is still recommended to check.

How Often Should I Clean My Gun

How Often Should I Clean My Gun

When I started growing interest in guns and hunting, there are a lot of questions I keep asking myself including the frequency of time for me to clean my gun. This problem is very common especially to those who are still new gun owners, and yet it remains to be a common question without a solid and definite answer since there are some passionate opinions about gun cleaning among owners that one can find out there.

I realized then that maintaining and cleaning my firearms is also a crucial factor for them to function adequately and for me to assure its safety and reliability. However, I also learned that aside from these obvious reasons, there are still some things to know to determine when to clean a gun which would be discussed in this article.

This article aims to deliver the best reasons and appropriate circumstances that will provide ideas for those who share the sentiment with me and are having issues determining how often a gun should be cleaned. The following are the helpful tips to come up with the best decision:

If The Firearm Was Exposed To Water, Moisture And Other Damaging Elements

A lot of circumstances would require one to clean the gun immediately after use especially if one is using corrosive ammunition or if it was exposed to damaging elements such as water, moisture, salts, dust and dirt. This action will promote prevention of rusting and corrosion from happening which may lead to wear and tear and even failure of the firearms.

For those who are using stainless steel barrel and receiver, yes you might not need to worry about the moisture since the stainless steel components help the corrosion to slow down. However, please be reminded that these stainless steel parts are more vulnerable to excess wear from dust and dirt. So, it is always best to prevent these cases from happening to avoid spending too much for repair or worst, to buy a new one.

The Primary Use Of The Firearm Should Also Be Considered

1. If A Gun Is Only Used For Plinking, Target Clays And Punching Holes In Papers.

One can allow a few months to pass or 3-4 trips to the lapse range before an in-depth cleaning can be done. Guns that are semi-automatics and rimfire firearms are also included since these types of weapons only show performance and reliability issues upon excessive fouling.

Related: What Is The Main Difference Between Centerfire And Rimfire Ammunition

However, it is best to regularly clean the bore, wipe everything down and re-lube every after a session to remove dust and dirt and prevent them from piling up since every fire of the gun leaves a residue to the barrel. Again, it should not be a deep or intensive cleaning.

2. For Match Guns And Firearms Used As Defensive Firearms

For match guns and firearms that used primarily for defensive purposes, it is always best to keep it clean, oiled and ready-to-go all the time to avoid reliability issues.

Revolvers, for example, are not immune, to fouling since carbon builds up on the cylinder and eventually makes the double action trigger to be very impossible to pull because the cylinder gap is clogged.

This goes the same with match guns which work accurately and reliably when clean.

Thus, it is only best to clean your defensive handguns immediately after every trip to the range regardless of the number of shots fired since this will assure you that the gun will not have any fouling-related issues in the future and this will spare you time and energy and will help you avoid any accidents.

They should be cleaned and lubricated more often since it suffers more abuse and is greatly exposed to damaging elements.

For Firearms That Are Rarely Used And Are Stored In A Safe Most Of The Time

Even those firearms that are rarely used and are only kept in the storage should have a regular cleaning and maintenance session at least once a year since most of the time, storage places are also prone to humidity and moisture which can cause small rust spots and affect the performance of the gun.

One thing that one needs to consider is the usage of desiccants which can maintain the humidity of the air in the storage place and can decrease the rust caused by the moisture in the air.

Deep Cleaning

Deep Cleaning

It is recommended that the internal parts of the gun should also be checked at least once a year, especially those parts which can be overlooked and cannot be seen without taking other parts.

Deep cleaning is best done with the help of an expert gunsmith that will make the job easier for you since this will include working on unfamiliar parts which piles of debris have piled up.

Other Benefits of Regular Cleaning and Maintenance of the Gun

Aside from keeping the performance and the reliability of the gun, a regular cleaning and maintenance of the gun will give you a chance to check the different parts of it which may not be easily noticed upon looking at it.

This will enable you to inspect the entire gun for cracks, rust, erosion corrosion and other defects that may need repair or replacing. This will prevent an unexpected failure and accidents in the future.

In addition, keeping a regular check-up of your gun will allow you be more familiar with the way the gun works. This will help you understand firearms more and how each part interact with each other and how to lubricate it properly.

By taking the necessary steps to clean and maintain your gun, you are becoming a responsible gun owner which results for a lot safer gun owning and handling.

My Take Away

As a conclusion, there is no definite way as to when and how often a gun should be cleaned. It depends on to on the level of usage and the purpose of its usage as indicated above. The bottom line is, the more often you use the gun, the more often you should clean it since a clean gun is a safe gun. This is one way to take care of your investments and to make sure that your weapon is ready for use when the need to use it arises.

The Ultimate Comprehensive Guide on How to Call Turkey -Turkey Calling Tips

The Ultimate Comprehensive Guide on How to Call Turkey -Turkey Calling Tips

With turkey season rolling around the corner, you might be feeling restless with eager anticipation. It’s possible that all your hunting gear is at the ready and your schedule has been completely blocked off so you can enjoy an interruption-free hunting spree.

Of course, it’s only natural for anyone to get excited about this exhilarating time of the year but before you start packing, it’s important to assess your turkey calling skills. Why? Your ability to attract these giant flightless birds will ultimately determine how many you bring home. If your calling skills fall short, you may struggle to find feathers.

You may think your skills are on point already, but there’s never any harm in trying to fine tune your turkey songs. A few years back, I believed I was the best turkey caller until I tried to improve my skills and hunted two times more turkeys than I’d usually attract.

So, if you want to make the most of your hunting trip and you want to bring home more than ever before, learn how to call turkey the right way with this comprehensive guide.

Understanding Turkey Calls

Simply imitating what you think a turkey should sound like isn’t enough to guarantee a successful hunt. Turkeys are very smart animals, and repeating the same turkey sounds to them will easily give away the fact that you’re not actually looking for a mate.

There are 8 common turkey calls and understanding how to replicate each one will help you fine-tune your turkey hunting skills.

1. Yelp – The yelping noise is almost similar to a chicken’s clucking sound. This turkey call is done by both males and females as a way to tell each other of their location. This is a vital sound that you should be able to do replicate if you want to be able to attract these wild animals to your vicinity.

2. Cluck – Clucks sound like short low clicking sounds that have a much slower cadence. Often, these sounds are a turkey’s way of telling others that they’re in the area. Both wild hens and toms perform the noise when they’re eating or simply moving around.

3. Putt – When you hear a turkey make this noise while it’s around you, you know you’ve failed your hunt. The putt is used to tell others in the area that there’s a threat or danger present. This turkey call is often confused for the cluck, but can be distinguished by its fading volume (due to the turkeys running away) and it’s faster cadence.

4. Purr – This is the typical vibrating noise that many birds make. Purring can either mean contentment as a turkey socializes with another turkey, or it can mean aggression. If you’ve ever seen two toms have at it, it’s likely that you’ve heard them purr right before the confrontation.

5. Cackle – As turkeys leave their roost, they’ll make a cackling noise which often sounds like a series of yelps and clucks. This basically indicates that they’ve “flown” down to the ground, so you’re likely to hear flapping noises along with the series of turkey sounds.

6. Kee Kee – For the strategic hunter, mastering this call is vital for hunting success. The kee kee noise indicates a lost turkey chick looking for its mother. By imitating this call, you can lead toms and hens to believe that a smaller turkey has been separated from the group, attracting more of them to your area in an attempt to save the lost “chick.”

7. Gobble – This is the turkey sound that most people are familiar with, and often sounds like a low, throaty, gurgling vocalization. This basically means that a tom is in heat and is looking for a hen to get some action.

8. Cutting – This is the female counterpart of the gobble which helps toms locate a willing female. Answering back a gobble with cutting will help lure male turkeys into your area.

How to Call Turkey- The 6 Essential Steps for Calling Turkeys

A male turkey separated from his hens looks for them in the brush

1. Find the Right Location

While there are designated turkey hunting grounds, finding them throughout this expanse can be a big challenge. Before you scan start calling out any turkeys, it’s important that you locate an ideal roost.

An active turkey roost should be free from strong winds and sturdy. To identify an active roost, check the ground beneath for feathers and fresh droppings.

2. Choose the Right Instrument

It’s likely that you’ve got a lot of turkey calling instruments with you during your hunt. Each one of these is developed to make a different noise, so be sure to choose the right one for the noise you’re trying to make.

What’s more, there are some turkey calling tools and instruments that require lengthy practice. Make sure you don’t leave home without thoroughly understanding your instrument first to get the best out of your hunting experience.

3. Start With a Yelp

The yelp turkey noise basically informs other turkeys that you’re in the area. This will hopefully attract them to your location and engage their interest in you.

The trick with the yelp noise is that you don’t overdo it. Try to slow down the cadence and relax your rhythm to achieve a more natural yelping noise.

4. Identify the Turkey

It’s likely that your yelps have attracted some turkeys, but before you release your fire, it’s important to identify what you’ve drawn to your area. Is it a male in heat? Is it a wary female? Is it an aggressive tom?

Finding out what type of turkey you’re up against will help you pick out the right sound that they want to hear. This way, you can be sure to draw them closer into your area for an easy hunting experience.

5. Call Back With The Right Noise

Depending on the sound the turkey is making, you should choose an appropriate call back to ensure the proper communication. Use the wrong call, and you can easily confuse and scare off a wary turkey.

Gobblers will usually want to hear a cut call from turkey females, while yelps and clucks can be called back with the same two sounds. If you hear a purr, it would be best to use a yelp as purring back could communicate aggression. You can also use the kee kee sound to notify a yelping or clucking turkey that you’re a lost “chick” that needs rescue.

6. Stop the Call

It’s anyone’s instinct to just keep making calls when they think they’re drawing in a target. But turkeys are a smart, and it’s possible that they pick up on the fact that you’re not actually a potential mate.

Instead of bombarding a turkey with a call, give them some time to consider your noises. If it doesn’t work out, let them calm down and wait for the right time to come in with your calls. Remember – slow and steady wins the turkey.

Hunting turkeys can be very exciting and fruitful, but only if you’re able to attract them to get a steady target. Be sure to keep this handy guide in hand the next time you try to call some turkeys to maximize returns out of your hunting trip.
